Style Icon: Blue Oyster Cult
September 1, 2009
Blue Oyster Cult‘s self titled 1972 debut record has hit the number one spot on my personal chart.
If you are unfamiliar with this record, I simply defer to the song “Cities On Flame With Rock and Roll”….
If that title alone doesn’t make you want to buy a record…..you must have stumbled on the wrong blog..
Early BOC rocks HEAVY!
And their look?……… Officially Iconic!
In Summation:
-Uncomfortably tight black leather (awkward studding optional)
-Personalized satin jackets
-Mirrored aviators (the kind you can barely see in…so proceed with caution)
-Leather hot pants with knee socks (yes, this one’s gender-neutral)
If you follow these tips, hopefully your city will be engulfed in the flames of rock n roll…BURN, BABY, BURN!

I dig it!

B.O.C. was perfect
You have reminded me that I keep meaning to add “She’s As Beautiful As A Foot” to the nickname: Rebel set list.
Hard to believe that some out there argue that B.O.C. are not a heavy metal band because they don’t wear corpse paint or have raging double bass drums throughout their songs or for whatever reason (http://www.metal-archives.com/board/viewtopic.php?p=1070916&sid=ab89998c3729be402b8268c30f98d82f). But hey — can you name anyone else who was wearing the black leather and studs back in 19-freakin’-73??? Most other rock musicians were in dirty, patched denim or even velvet and flowy satin at that point (sorry to single you out, Rob Halford). B.O.C. had the sound and the look to qualify as the FIRST American metal band, and always looked very cool doing it. I’ll never forget the B.O.C. gigs I saw in the late 70s. That’s probably due to permanent laser-related retina damage.
Corpse-paint and raging bass drums=black metal NOT heavy metal. No one ever said that “trve” HEAVY metal needs black and white facial paint and lightning quick drums. You must have either forgone grad school or got kicked out for horrible research skills. Your first statement sounds completely unwarranted, even if you’ve heard that argument before.
