Style Icon: Faith No More

July 2, 2009

I had been a big fan of Faith No More before I saw them perform at the Download Festival last month.

Their extraordinary performance elevated my status from admiring fan to obsessed fan.

Mike Patton’s stage presentation was the most inspiring thing I’ve seen in years. I can barely put into words, only that it involved calisthenics and somewhat unpleasant audio processing effects. Patton and the rest of the band just have that ‘It’ factor that is sadly lacking in most of today’s performers.

I came to the bold conclusion that they are creative geniuses.

Not just for their music and performance, but also their fashion…

Get ready!

The following options are to be considered:

-Sweatpants with cowboy boots and a leather jacket

-Boxer shorts with cowboy boots and a leather jacket

-Unflattering cropped trousers with high tops

-Unflattering long trousers with high tops

-At the very least, you can incorporate a scrunched sock into your look. The more inappropriate  it is with your outfit, the better.

The motion picture display below adds two more choices:

-a capri length suit with the a fore mentioned scrunched sock/high top combo:

-a completely ineffective ponytail

If you heed to any of these suggestions, please post photos!

I’m digging your blog. Faith No More seem to be the late 80s/early 90s version of Blue Oyster Cult, which i only realized when you mentioned sweatpants with cowboy boots. On the cover of a live BOC album, one of the members has his socks pulled up over his jeans.

Best post ever. That earth T shirt on the circus cover is amazing. And the Mr. Bungle T shirt in the rock beat photo is also classic. Rad. Keep up the good work.

ROCK ON! What a great post – kudos to you for crediting probably one of the best bands ever! Keep those posts coming – you’re right on the money with the kind of music I’m into! I’m loving reading them whilst eating my fish and chips.

Great pictures…I was obsessed with FNM in my youth (and admittedly still am!) and would use Mike Patton as my inspiration on how to dress. I am well-known for the high top and scrunched socks look and other variations of Patton-esque styles of clothing, most of them quite outrageous. Patton’s sense of style is one of the many things that enhances his creative genius–great post!

On the one hand I agree with you 100% that FNM are great fashion icons, on the other hand I think the most interesting fashion periods happened after The Real Thing era and I’m kind of disappointed to see that you failed to include any of those pictures.

    Worthy of Note –

Angel Dust era – Patton chopped his hair and adopted a psycho car mechanic look. It wasn’t just a superficial fashion change, but you could see that his stage presence had changed with that look as well.

Roddy gets an eyebrow ring, then Patton gets an eyebrow ring.
Roddy rocks the Errol Flynn mustache, then Patton rocks the Errol Flynn mustache. Little fashion power exchange going on between those two and you can tell who the dominant personality is.

Patton rocking the Errol Flynn mustache all throughout the KFAD era. You don’t see that many guys, much less rock stars, rocking the Errol Flynn mustache anymore. And that’s not the same as the mustache + goatee combo deal that Patton is sporting these days, everyone has one of those. But Just the mustache?! That was a pretty unique look.

Sharp Dressed Man era of Album of The Year. I love it when they would come out in matching suits and ties and then by the end of the set Patton was a mess. Very underrated fashion era.

Michael! I couldn’t ever agree more w/ U!! It’s Exactly as u describing it…right on the dot!! 100% Clear!! – Surprisingly there haven’t been many notes in the past about Pattons “lock-hair-sideburns” that he had ’92!! Have anybody seen someone w/ similar “wet-thin-things” on a guy before and after that period?? I for Sure Haven’t!! Of course I grew my own back in the days…and I’m sure someone else did though!

I’ve always loved their own original so called “fashion-style”! And as obssessed like I were…I copyed EVERYTHING!! And I truly miss their “clothing-style” from ’90-’95…but mostly definitely 1992!! -THE GOLDEN YEAR!!-

Greatest american band ever …… this will be fully realized in due time.
The Download show was incredible. The performance of “Mark Bowen” before the encore was MIND BLOWING.

Thank god they’re back. It will give some of the younger generations a chance to see this amazing band live when they tour the states.

Wow – we must be on the same page. I just did an inspired by FNM post – fashion wise – a few weeks ago on my blog.

Mine wasn’t literal though. Otherwise I would be rocking the floral spandex Mike sports in the From out of Nowhere video. YIKES! And to think you can buy that at Topshop.

Now I’m onto Mr. Bungle. Come take a look.
